According to his biographer, Anne E. Neimark, Woody Guthrie painted this legend on his guitar "in a fit of patriotism and faith in the impact of the song", after writing Talking Hitler's Head Off Blues (circa 1943). The song was printed in the Daily Worker, the newspaper of the Communist Party USA.
